Getting Started at Newbie Website Design

If you’ve spent even a little amount of time surfing the Internet, then I’m sure you’ve seen some stunning websites, some pretty good websites, and even websites designed by people whose own mothers wouldn’t claim affiliation to the designer.

The sad part is that if these budding designers had just spent a little time learning the basics of good layout and website design, then their work would see great improvement (and their mothers would be proud.)

Let’s begin!

In order to make it easier for you to get the most out of NWD, I’ve created a list of beginning tutorials, popular posts, and series articles of interest to beginners to website design. Let’s get going!

Navigating around NWD

Newbie Website Design is a blog. Since blogs are a little different from traditional websites, it can be a little confusing navigating around one. Here are some posts to help clear up the confusion:

What exactly is a blog?
How do I use a blog?
The blog flow
How to subscribe to the free RSS feed

Understanding the Internet

Designing a website is challenging enough. But throw complex terms like “domain name”, “HTML”, and “CSS” into the mix and most newbies run for the digital hills of cyberspace. Here are some posts to help take the mystery out of those foreign concepts as well as teaching you more about the whole wide world of the World Wide Web.

What is a domain name (URL)?
What is “hosting a website”?
What is HTML? What is XHTML?
What is CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)?
You DON’T visit websites
What is Internet Marketing?

“My first website” series

The “My first website” series is an ongoing series of posts whose aim is to take newbies step-by-step through the process of hand-coding a website. Easy-to-follow instructions and detailed code examples highlight this series.
